The main findings of the Human Genome Project
were first of all that there were fewer genes than was originally believed in
the human genome. The number of genes has been determined to be around 20,500.
Before the project, researchers thought
humans had as many as 150,000 genes.
Another important finding was the genes do not have just one specific role to
play, as was thought earlier. Actually, genes can make up to three proteins.
Understanding the roles and numbers of genes
has helped to pave the way to a better understanding of diseases and their
cures.
Another surprising fact is that, according to
your DNA, you are 99.9 per cent identical to every other human on Earth. That
seems unlikely considering how different everyone looks and acts, but it shows
that the 0.1 per cent of the DNA that varies from person to person must be
important.
