In a historic election for the Press Club of India (PCI), senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah became the first woman to hold the top post in the organisation’s 68-year history. This landmark victory also marks the first time a journalist from Northeast India has ascended to the prestigious role.
Barooah’s
mandate was resounding, winning 1,019 votes against her opponent Atul Mishra’s
129—a decisive show of confidence from the journalistic community.
In her post-election remarks, Barooah thanked her
colleagues and pledged to champion the journalist community. She highlighted
her vision for a more inclusive and unified media landscape, stressing that the
PCI must remain a robust, independent forum for all of India’s
journalists.
The election is celebrated as a transformative moment for Indian
journalism, setting a powerful precedent for gender equality and regional
representation within one of the country’s key media institutions.
