World’s First Artificial Eye (Bionic Eye)

Health: Dianne Ashworth 54 becomes the first patient fitted with an early prototype of the world’s first bionic eye in surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Australia.

What is Bionic Eye?

A visual prosthesis often referred to as a bionic eye, is an experimental visual device intended to restore functional vision in those suffering from partial or total blindness.  A bionic eye mimics the function of the retina to restore for those with severe vision loss. It uses a retinal implant connected to a video camera to convert images into electrical impulses that activate remaining retinal cells which then carry the signal back to the brain.

In the early prototype bionic eye, the electrode is connected to a receptor fitted to the back of Ashworth’s ear, which is then plugged in through an external wire is then plugged in through an external wire to a unit in the laboratory.Australian researchers in the laboratory use the unit to control the information sent to Ashworth’s eye, allowing them to study how the brain reacts to the feedback from Ashworth will allow researchers to develop a vision processor so that they can build images using the flashes light.
