World NEWS: Starting April 2021, Japanese couples can receive about $5,600 (¥600,000) to help them start their lives as newlyweds. The grant is from Japan’s newlywed support program available in some municipalities across the country.

The program is meant to boost Japan’s low birth rate, credited to less and later marriages. The country’s already sluggish birth rate fell to record lows in 2019.

The number of children born last year was 865,000, down from about 2.7 million in the late 1940s, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

To be eligible for the newlywed support program “both husband and wife will have to be under age 40 as of the registered date of marriage and have a combined income of less than ¥5.4 million (about $51,200),” Kyodo reports.
