Lalhming Mawii artist from Mizoram gets WEAA Awards


NE NEWS : Mizoram’s woman artist Lalhming Mawii, aka Amoii, has been awarded a prestigious Women’s Excellent Achievement Award in recognition of her immense contribution to art. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s award sans ceremony and it has been conferred to her online. WEAA has been conferred to Indian women from all every walk of life in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the nation and overseas.

  Forty-one-year-old Amoii is a self-taught artist who runs her own art gallery ‘Art Novelty Gallery’ at Chaltlang neighbourhood in Aizawl since 2005. She started Art Novelty Institute of Art and Craft for children and adults alike since 2013. “Besides children, a number of adults who wanted to pursue architecture and fashion designing enrolled in my school. I have received positive feedback from my former students,”

Being an Indian woman and a mother of four children who has heavy responsibilities at home, Amoii had faced so much difficulty in being a full-time artist.

“With four children to take care of and household chores that a typical Indian woman has to perform, I sometimes thought I had chosen the wrong profession. But my love for art keeps me going all these years,” she told this correspondent.
