Rhys Davids has pointed out an
interesting aspect concerning then peoples of sixteen states
that the earth was considered as their divine mother and being mother, she said
to them, “No mortal must give me away.” The Bodos residing in the North-East
India does also maintain the belief even today.
In fact
they are stated in the Vishu Purana as the progenies of Mother Earth and
Lord Vishnu which they continue to
display by associating themselves with Mother Earth by way of using surname, ‘Bwiswmuthiary’ or
‘Basumatary’ .
In old day, not only the sale of land was taboo for them but also they abstained from digging and/or ploughing land on certain days during the year. This tradition of the Bodos undoubtedly links to those ancient people of India.
