The competition to develop advanced AI technology is
heating up, with Google unveiling its own chatbot called Bard for search on
February 6. This experimental conversational AI, powered by Google’s LaMDA, has
been released to trusted testers.
However, the chatbot got off to a rocky start, prompting
the Alphabet company to work on improving its efficiency.
The latest report from Business Insider suggests that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has sent a memo to employees requesting them to
dedicate two to four hours daily to testing Bard, which the company plans to
integrate into search.
This memo underscores the sense of urgency felt by Google
to lead in generative AI-backed search, particularly after Microsoft launched
its new Bing search and Edge browser powered by ChatGPT. To enhance Bard's
performance, Google has started "dogfooding" the chatbot by testing
it internally before making it publicly available.
The company has thousands of internal and external
testers providing feedback on Bard's safety, quality, and groundedness.
Google's reputation took a hit when the chatbot provided an incorrect response
to a question about the James Webb Space Telescope. The error caused the search
giant's stock to drop by over 9% the day after the incident.
