The Department of Telecom in Assam has detected and disconnected around 148,000 fake mobile connections activated through point-of-sale (PoS) of different telecom service providers (TSPs). These connections were made using fake or forged documents and were being used for illegal activities such as cybercrime, financial fraud, and antisocial activities.
The Department has
taken various initiatives to detect and take action against PoS personnel
involved in selling fraudulent products and individuals who have made such
connections using fake identities.
One such initiative is the use of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial recognition system (ASTR) solution to detect fraudulent connections taken using the same photo but with different names.
Using this
advanced technology, the Department has identified and shared a list of over
62,000 fraudulent connections with TSPs, including Vodafone, RIIO, Bharati
Airtel, and BSNL, directing them to take action against the errant PoS and file
FIRs.
The Department has also launched the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) portal in Assam, which enables citizens to request the blocking of lost or stolen mobile devices.
The portal is integrated with the Assam
Government's CCTNS system, allowing citizens to access the nearest police
station for raising blocking requests. In addition, the Department has detected
three fake telecom exchanges in Assam last year.
The Department's efforts are aimed at curbing the use of fake mobile connections for illegal activities and ensuring the safety and security of citizens.
By disconnecting fraudulent connections and taking action against
errant PoS personnel and individuals, the Department is sending a strong
message that such activities will not be tolerated.
