History: The auspicious  day of Sankranti is most eargerly awaited by many to climb the hill-top of Baokhungri and feel the divine touch of Sibrai(Lord Shiva).A Bodo legend has it that Baokhungri  hill is scared dwelling of Sibrai and other deities. The traditional folklore depicts that Princess Deeplai, the daughter of King Daukha (Believed to be  King Daksha) sacrificed her life in Baokhungri peak when she received the tragic news of martyrdom of her beloved, Prince Charming of the neighbourhood kingdom. In Bodo, ‘Bao’ means ‘to offer or propitiate’ and ‘Khungri’ means Princess.Hence, the name Baokhungri gives a meaning of Princess who offered herself to God in name of her beloved.

It is believed that if one climbs the hill top thrice consecutively once in every year on the Sankranti Day,he/she is blessed with the boon of success in love and conjugal bliss.
