IIT Bombay has developed a technology that can convert dry leaves into a cooking fuel.

The system uses biomass gasification, where dry leaves and garden waste are processed and heated in a low-oxygen environment to produce a combustible gas for cooking.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has been working on this project since 2014, overcoming initial challenges such as clinker formation and smoke emissions. The technology has been patented and is already being used on campus, and has shown impressive results, reducing LPG consumption by 30-40% in canteens and kitchens.

It is being scaled up for use in large hostels, with plans to deploy it in community kitchens and rural areas. By adopting this technology, India could reduce its dependence on imported & LPG and mitigate rising fuel costs. By converting waste into fuel, it not only reduces dependency on imported gas but also helps manage environmental waste effectively.
