Special Coverage (Article) Noted sportsman, literateur, educationist, poet, dramatist, silent social worker and ex-principal of DIET, Kokrajhar Chanakya Brahma passed away due to cardiac arrest on October, 31st of 2012 last in Beijing, China. He was one of the twelve sportsmen representing from India in the sports mega events being celebrated in China during that time and period. His sudden demise is great loss to India in general and north-east India in particular. A man of versatile personality Chanakya Brahma established Khomlainai a traditional game form of the Bodo in the international level is really a benchmark for India and especially for the Bodos. The Bodos are generally deep-rooted sports lover and this instinct must also be seen in Chanakya Brahma. Brahma has usually played athletics like half marathon, hundred metres etc. from his childhood. But in the main he made a big pride the north-east India and the Bodos at large discovering Khomlainai in the world panorama. Still Brahma was known more as an educationist than as a sportsman. He was retired as principal of DIET, Kokrajhar and continued as a contractual teacher in the C.T.E. (College Teachers’ Education) Kokrajhar. He had presented different seminals on the different occasions organised by Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Bodo writers’ Academy, Sahitya Academe, schools, colleges etc. He attended as a resource person in socio-cultural, socio-religious meets.
He was also a part of Bodo literary and cultural troops celebrating ‘16th November’ and ‘Bwisagu Festival’ in the metropolitan cities like Kolkata, Delhi etc. and foreign countries like Nepal. He was again very popular as tale-teller among the general masses. As such he composed some important books of it and others in Bodo. Hence anybody who has come across him would remember due to his easy going nature, soft spoken attitude and always smiling face. He didn’t join any Bodo political party. But he was used to be invited in their talks, discussions, seminars and meetings to guide and advise them towards right perspective.
Recently did he seem a regular customer of senior citizens and civil-society’s forum and meeting for the solution of illegal migration and taking initiative of rehabilitations of legal displacements in the aftermath of the conflicts in between the Bodos and illegal migrants in the BTAD, Assam. He was thus secretary of Senior Citizen Forum under the aegis of B.T.C set up.
Chanakya Brahma was one of the most popular names as a poet among Phithikha group in Kokrajhar and thus the juniors of the latter fondly, rather respectfully called him ‘sir’.
Thus Chanakya Brahma Sir was survived by his beloved wife, two sons, three daughters, a couple of sons-in-law, grand-sons, friends, relatives and well-wishers. On his ‘saradu’ (adyashradha) today we pray to the Almigthy to ensure eternal peace to the departed soul.
