Get ready to rethink everything you know about internet speed.
China has taken a monumental leap forward by launching the nation's first
commercial 10-gigabit broadband network, setting a new global benchmark for
connectivity.
The groundbreaking service went live on Sunday, April 20, in
Sunan County, Hebei Province. This ambitious project is the result of a
collaboration between tech giant Huawei and state-owned telecom provider China
Unicom.
So, how fast is 10G broadband? The numbers are staggering. The
network boasts potential download speeds of up to 9,834 megabits per second
(Mbps) and upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps. Even more impressive is its
responsiveness, with latency—the delay in data transfer—as low as 3
milliseconds. This incredible performance is powered by advanced 50G PON
technology, which supercharges existing fiber-optic cables to carry vastly more
data.
To put this into perspective, downloading a full-length 4K
movie, which is about 20 gigabytes in size, typically takes 7 to 10 minutes on
a standard 1 Gbps connection. On this new 10G network, the same high-quality
film can be downloaded in under 20 seconds.
This achievement propels China to the forefront of broadband
technology, surpassing the current top commercial speeds available in other
nations known for fast internet, such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
