Amthisuani Hamlainai

(A scene of Bodo women playing Kabaddi as a part of celebration of Amthisuani)

Culture & Tradition: Amthisua, which falls in the month of Ashar, is one of the most seasonal festivals observed by Bodos.More than a merry making festival Amthisua is observed as a sacred occasion of holiness.Bodos believe  this special occasion to be the period of menstruation of Aai Bwiswmuthai or Mother-Earth.This year Amuthisua commenced from 2nd of June 2015 and like every other year people celebrated Amthisua with mood of  festivity and cherished having in a group of friends ,families and colleagues.

During Amthusia,Bodos restrict themselves in doing many regular  chores of the day in farmer’s life .they do not dig the soil, do not plough the land,do not cut the useful tree and do not  enter the granary (Bakhri). In other words,it ca be said that Bodo farmers do not work in their agricultural field and remain at home observing Amthisua for a week.It is believed that if a tree or any plant is cut during this period  of Amthisua(unclear period),it shows retardation in its growth. Now a days ,schools are hardly observing some of the healthy traditional habits which is very important  to generate down these tradition for all young ,old ,boys ,girls ,men and women to cherish together the seasonal fruits like jack-fruits,mango,pineapples,cucumber and lerko etc available during the period .In earlier times, students observed Amthisua in an enjoyable manner in schools. Each student used to bring whatever fruit was available in their homes to school  and collectively  prepared fruit salad. Thus, the tastes of seasonal fruits were enjoyed together learning  lessons of sharing and caring in schools, the temple of learing. On the last day of Amthisua,i.e. the seventh day, Bodo women replace their broom sticks with new ones and clean their houses. Those who have mud houses plaster them with mud and cowdung paste.

A Great Ambuvasi Mela is held at Kamakhya temple of Guwahati in Assam every year during Amthisua every year.tis is one of the great pilgrimage centre in the country and during this scared fair, thousands of believers throng to the temple to Goddess Shakti.
Most probably ,this believe in Goddess Shakti have been adopted by mainstream Hindus from tribal community like Bodos who observes Amthisua as a period of menstruation of Mother-Goddess and Bodo tribes who are generally famers don’t hurt Mother-Goddess by restricting themselves in notv doing any agricultural work and remaining  at home paying tribute to Mother-Earth where  from the living beings are able to enjoy life this planet.
