The Serpents of Kokrajhar:(Part-1)

(In the picture from clockwise Kokrajhar map is shown and along with the names of the snake)

Environment NEWS: Kokrajhar has an area of about 3129 sq.km and out of which at least 800sq.km is densely forested which serves as the homeland for various species of flora and fauna some of which are rare, while others are common, Rare species include Golden langur, Adjutant stork, Fish eagles, hispid hare, and Pygmy Hog. It is also a home for various serpents including poisonous snakes and non-poisonous ones.

The poisonous snakes:

1.Monocle cobra:

Deadliest snake found here is the Naja kaouthia or simply monocled cobra this species of a cobra can grow as long as 2 m, they are highly aggressive and often found moving around the villages and towns where they get attracted by mice that are a threat in localities.
Cobras are Neurotoxins and their venom damages our nervous system that leads to the instant dead just after a few minutes of its bite and as there is no anti-venom available for this species in this region it is perhaps at the top list of a killer in my snake list.

2.Banded krait:

The Bungarus fasciatus commonly known as Jebow gual is another species that has enough potential to kill at least 5-10 grown men in its per bite. Their venom is far more toxic as compared to cobras, still they don't bite unless and until you step on them. They are nocturnal(night active) and always found wandering in narrow lanes and even near houses and paddy fields. They eat mice and other snakes, they have a triangular shaped body that makes their body quite hard and rough. There is no any anti-venom available for this species in any hospital of this region so they are dangerous.

Non-Poisonous:

3.Rat snake:

Jebow daras(Bodo) Ptyas mucosa, is feared by all people due to its short temper way of living, they are believed to be poisonous by many of common people but actually they don't have guts to kill even a Frog even after thousands of its bites, just want to clarify the worthless and blind fear of common people,They are feared on because of its fascinating body that seems to be very similar with cobras. However, they are regarded as farmer friendly because they feed mainly on rats and mice..Dhamans is the common name of this snake.

4.Buff striped keelback:

Jebou Bamwn, is another snake in the top list of non-venomous species, without any reason people get frighten by their fearsome appearance and they are killed brutally with stones .But my dear people you can even pick these tiny babies they won't harm you.

5.Common tree snake:

Jebou gwran(Bodo) they are so much feared in villages of Kokrajhar that people often behaves as halfdead if they get close contact with this species, and why will not you, they love humans and so found more commonly, but they are not highly venomous, just a mild that would not kill you.

6.Worm snake:

- Jebow kodal(Bodo) the non-venomous earthworm-like often people are confused by its earthworm-like body. They are not venomous don't misunderstand it.

7.Common water snake:

Jebou donda(Bodo)
*All water snakes are venomous, but these species are not so much they won't kill you. However, water kraits are very harmful and can cause fatalities.
