(A people climbing Baokhungri Hill Picture by Ex Asstt.Photographer)

Environment NEWS: Baokhungri Hill means ‘Bao’ means ‘to offer or propitiate’ and ‘Khungri’ means Princess. So , how this name came “A Bodo legend has it that Baokhungri  hill is the scared dwelling of Sibrai and other deities. The traditional folklore depicts that Princess Deeplai, the daughter of King Daukha (Believed to be  King Daksha) sacrificed her life in Baokhungri peak when she received the tragic news of the martyrdom of her beloved, Prince Charming of the neighbourhood kingdom. In Bodo, ‘Bao’ means ‘to offer or propitiate’ and ‘Khungri’ means Princess.Hence, the name Baokhungri gives a meaning of Princess who offered herself to God in the name of her beloved”.

No one actually can say when and how it; Tradition of climbing in Baokhungri started. According to one old woman, she says this way “When we are young we used to climb the hill for enjoyment we used to carry food and water”. So, could that be the reason how tradition climbing began yet, another interview with one old woman, she says in a different way “There is one traditional plant and to bring that leaf one climb the hill” and used for? “For drinking wine”

Extracted from the “The Mighty Hill (Baokhungri)” poem written by (Young Bodo Writer)
I don’t think I had to say much about this poem. There are many small, small temples in Baokhungri Hill , the main lying at the top the hill on the southern side, many trees have been cut down to make a road running through the  heart of the hill. This Hill has many valuable animals as it calls in Chakracila Sanctuary.

On the anther side; I went to Hill to investigate the Landslide, I did hear of Landslide the very day after the earthquake occurred in the middle of the midnight on 21 August this month .According, to my own Idea it could be 5 Richter scale, as flood storm into many people houses in Kokrajhar and other districts of the Assam. That, days I was covering news on flood for our (The Bodo Tribe ‘ Online-Magazine’) a few days later I went to the Hill to investigate how all this happen. I find out the shocking news when an old man who lives near the Baokhungri Hill has to say  this “I knew the hill’s was about fall down” Did landslide came first or Earthquake ?“No, Landslide first came, I heard a loud sound it was kind of like gorrrrrr” one of the elderly woman visitor who came to see the side scene of the landslide of Baokhungri Hill said ‘I could hear it like a rain” back to old man “Many paddy fields have been destroyed by it, thank god there were no houses near it” Is any temple has been washing away by it?  “No, no none” He then pointed to something unusual to us‘Did you see that in the top of the hill little bit near the peak of the hill a white portion” yes,yes after nearly taking minute to recognized it ‘There lived a short man(Bownashat)’ Did he still leave there and how he live ? ‘That’s are God’s blessing, how will I able to say about it’‘There is a cave and he lived there’

After that, we left that place. When I went near to hill, I could smell something odd that was coming from some dead bodies it could be anything. Trees branches were scattered, big, big stone was washed away several feet away from high above the Hill. New Fountain was created; existing river was submerged by sands. Existing only in name. The area could be covering 10 Bighas and could be more can’t be. After the landslide visitors coming from various sides of Kokrajhar and nearby are common scene.
